What is the history of Hidden Hills?

Hidden Hills was developed by landscape architect and developer  A.E. Hansen. Hansen was also involved in the development of Rolling Hills Estates, Palos Verdes Estates, and Beverly Hills Harold Lloyd estate. The city’s roots extend much farther back in history, though. The area was inhabited for centuries years by Native Americans of the Fernandeño-Tataviam and Chumash-Venturaño . The area is believed to be a stagecoach stop found on the famous Camino Real, a rest point between Mission San Fernando Rey de Expana and Mission San Buenaventura. Right across today’s 101 freeway is Leonis Adobe, one of the oldest surviving private residences in Los Angeles Country. Acquired by wealthy rancher Miguel Leonis sometime around 1850, it was the part of a sprawling property that extended far beyond the Hidden Hills area of today. Upon his death it was a part of many lawsuits filed by family and others, all trying to get a piece of the large estate holdings, which in 1889 were valued at over $1 million. From that time until the 1950s, it was largely used for agriculture, including citrus, nuts, dry crops and irrigated crops. Hidden Hills was incorporated as a city on October 19, 1961.
